“Surongo” (2023) – Synopsis
“Surongo” is a Bangladeshi crime thriller film directed by Raihan Rafi. The story centers on Masud, a modest and hardworking electrician from a rural village in Bangladesh. Despite his humble background, Masud is known for being kind-hearted and deeply loyal. One day, he encounters a beautiful woman named Moyna, and the two quickly fall in love. Their connection is strong and passionate, and soon they decide to get married.
In his quest to provide a better life for Moyna, Masud accepts a job opportunity in Malaysia, hoping that working abroad will help him earn enough money to build a stable future. However, during his time away, things take a dark turn. While Masud is sacrificing and working hard overseas, Moyna begins an illicit affair with Masud’s friend, Jahir, a flashy and manipulative man who seduces her with expensive gifts and attention.
Eventually, Moyna elopes with Jahir, betraying Masud’s trust. But her dreams quickly shatter when she discovers that Jahir is already married and has no genuine intentions toward her. Disillusioned and humiliated, Moyna is abandoned, while Masud, unaware of her betrayal, returns to his village with the hopes of reuniting with his wife and starting a new life.
Upon returning, Masud is devastated to find his house repossessed due to unpaid debts, and Moyna nowhere to be found. He learns of her betrayal and the affair with Jahir, which pushes him into a state of emotional and mental turmoil. Feeling utterly broken and driven by both desperation and vengeance, Masud devises a bold and dangerous plan: he will rob a bank.
With no criminal background or resources, Masud begins an unimaginable task — digging a tunnel from a remote location to the vault of a bank. For nine long months, he works tirelessly underground, risking his life, avoiding detection, and staying focused solely on his goal. His meticulous planning and sheer determination eventually pay off. Masud breaks into the bank and steals a large sum of money.
After the robbery, he contacts Moyna through a video call, revealing that he is now rich and has done the impossible. However, rather than reconciliation, Moyna betrays him again — this time by reporting him to the police. Masud is arrested and imprisoned, but his journey doesn’t end there.
Even from behind bars, Masud proves to be resourceful. Using the same method that helped him rob the bank, he starts digging another tunnel, this time to escape from prison. His successful escape stuns law enforcement and makes headlines across the country.
In the end, Masud’s story is one of love turned into heartbreak, and heartbreak transformed into vengeance. “Surongo” is not just a tale of a bank heist — it’s a character-driven drama that explores human emotions, betrayal, resilience, and how far a person can go when pushed to their limits. It challenges the notion of morality and justice, leaving viewers questioning who the real villain is in a world filled with lies and deceit.
